What Are Indigestion Symptoms to be Concerned About

Indigestion is something that most people will feel at one time or another. Even with the strongest stomach, there are times when we simply eat too much which will cause some of the symptoms of indigestion. There are also times when we may eat something that is past its freshness date. This can also cause indigestion symptoms to appear. Sometimes the indigestion symptoms should cause concern in those that are suffering from them and it?s important to know what those symptoms are.

Indigestion is caused by stomach acid. This acid is used to digest your food in its regular usage. There is a layer of mucus that protects your stomach lining from that acid. The mucus does not extend to the esophagus. In the case of heartburn, the valve between the stomach and the esophagus does not work correctly which will allow the stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus. This causes the irritation that people feel when they?re suffering from heartburn.

If you are experiencing indigestion symptoms, you may feel some things like pain or fullness in your upper abdomen, heartburn, loss of appetite, feeling sick, or gas in the form of belching or flatulence. These will usually cause minor discomfort. Most of the time, feelings of indigestion will not last long and can be cared for with over the counter medications such as Pepto-Bismol. When these indigestion symptoms last longer than usual or occur frequently, that is when there should be concern and you should see a doctor to rule out something more serious.

There are some symptoms that will come along with your indigestion that should further spur you to see your doctor. If these indigestion symptoms occur, you should not hesitate in making an appointment to see a doctor: weight loss that you didn?t plan on, indigestion happening for the first time after 45 years of age, and severe pain that worsens or changes. Again, these should indicate to you that there is almost certainly something more serious happening and you?ll have to see a doctor to determine what it is. Often, even with a more serious problem, changing your diet will help take care of the problem, but seeing the doctor will determine if that is necessary, or if something more drastic will have to be done.

Some indigestion is harmless. It happens due to neglectful eating habits or other things that may happen to make food less appealing to your stomach as usual. When your indigestion is harmless it can be taken care of with over the counter medications. You will feel discomfort for a short time and with the use of the medication it will go away. Also, pregnant women will often feel indigestion which is harmless and will usually go away once the baby is born.

More serious indigestion will present more serious discomfort that won?t go away as easily. This will need to be treated by a doctor. It may be handled through a change in diet or relaxation exercises. Other issues may require more invasive steps. If your heartburn occurs frequently and interferes with your every day life and you?re not pregnant, it would be safest to be seen by a doctor.
